Boosting your diet with fibre is the closest thing to a ‘quick-fix’ (and it works!)

A couple weeks ago – as I was getting into the full swing of summer, a funny thing happened. Metamucil (yes, the dietary fibre brand that was a staple for my grandfather) approached me about working together on their 2-week challenge. Full disclosure: I’ve used a fibre supplement in the past, and while I’m all for them, I was already feeling pretty good about my diet, exercise regimen, and regularity when they reached out.

I agreed to try the challenge out anyway, but I didn’t expect to notice a difference since I wasn’t in that “icky” place (you know, like after a bunch of holiday indulging). I figured it couldn’t hurt though, the psyllium fibre in Metamucil helps to lower cholesterol levels* and promote digestive health (by relieving irregularity).


The Challenge:

The details of the Metamucil Two-Week Challenge were incredibly simple:

  • Take 1 serving of Metamucil with 240 ml of water or cool liquid; drink briskly
  • If you like, gradually increase your intake to up to 3 servings per day
  • There’s no need to stop after 14 days; this can become part of your normal routine

 While the ‘promise’ was simple, it still sounded great:

  • Metamucil can gently remove the waste that weighs you down (making you feel bloated and heavy) by relieving irregularity so you can welcome a ‘lighter-feeling’ starting within two weeks.

My info package also included a fact that didn’t surprise me, but definitely bears mentioning:

Canadian women need 25 grams of fibre per day but the majority are only getting half that much! Yikes! Bring on the challenge.


My Challenge Experience:

img_0864Day 1-3: I wasn’t expecting a difference right away, and as I said – I’m generally pretty good about getting in my leafy greens and exercise, plus I’m solid on my water intake. In the first couple days, I felt more bloated than before the challenge, but that’s normal for anyone adjusting to a fibre supplement. (Was it annoying though?! You betcha!)

Day 4-6: In the next few days, my regularity started to adjust, but I still hadn’t noticed that “lighter” feeling. With that being said, it really was SO EASY to add the supplement into my routine each morning.

Day 7-10: By the time I was a week in, I was definitely feeling wayyy less bloated!

Day 11-14: At the end of the challenge, I was surprisingly impressed. I certainly didn’t think I would feel as much of a shift as I did. It really goes to show that layering in another small ‘healthy’ piece of the puzzle into an already-healthy routine can still make an impact!

Note: I prefer to keep my regular diet as natural as possible, so I opted to use the Metamucil psyllium fibre capsules because they are free from any added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or artificial flavours.


My Takeaways:

social-media-postIn the summer months, we’re out and about way more…and while we have that desire to rock the fit-and-flare dress that accentuates our (hopefully) whittled waists, or wear the shorty-shorts that show off our lean legs, often we’re also indulging in lots of extra calories from delicious margaritas and creamy tacos. Know what this means? Lots of extra drinking + salt + sugar! Ugh! Not to mention, most of our favourite ‘indulgence’ foods are completely devoid of fibre.

For me, although I’m very cognizant of what I eat as a health and wellness expert, upping my fibre still made a significant impact on how I  felt – and served as a much-needed supplement to my regular fruit and veggie intake.

As far as I’m concerned the challenge worked wonders for me. By relieving irregularity, I felt lighter and generally fantastic.




What About You?

Let’s face it, irregularity is not cute, and could be the reason you’re feeling off. Even if you’re not feeling ‘off’ (like I wasn’t) – just think about the fact that you could be feeling even better than you do!

If you’re looking to increase your fibre intake, try adding an extra boost of fibre through a supplement like Metamucil, drinking plenty of water, and getting in those fresh fruits and veggies. Even small, easy tweaks like this will have you feeling like a million bucks within a short 14 days.
